Helping the Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation Build More Sustainable Livelihoods

At Cypher Environmental, a core component of our corporate ethos is to “Always do what’s right”. Our belief and commitment to this principle led us to create our Cypher Green Roads initiative which seeks to support the communities where we work in building more sustainable livelihoods and greater resilience.

While we operate in communities around the world, our projects and applications in Manitoba, where we are based, are particularly fulfilling. This summer, we had the opportunity to provide dust control to the Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation in preparation for their annual Pow Wow. Through the Cypher Green Roads initiative and in partnership with Enbridge and Subcan Ltd., we were able to successfully provide a dust control application on the main road leading onto Pow Wow grounds completely free of charge to the community.

Thank you to our customer and partner Enbridge for first introducing us to the Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation, as well as Subcan Ltd., for their donation of time, labour, and equipment in making the application possible. We are always happy to see our products (in this case, our Cypher DUST/BLOKR®) used here at home!

Our work to support sustainable livelihoods is guided by three themes that exemplify our purpose:

  • improving road infrastructure to enable commerce and wellbeing
  • helping communities build capability and self-reliance for the future
  • partner with our customers and community partners to promote climate and environmental sustainability

“This application will have a huge impact on the safety of the pedestrians and also for children playing nearby who get dusted every time someone drives by on the gravel road,” says Project Manager Jayme Gladden who oversaw the implementation of this project. “This donation will increase the quality of life for everyone in the community from young to the elderly.” Jayme generously donated his time to assist with this project (cutting his holiday short to be able to be present while the product was being applied to the road). This commitment to helping communities find more sustainable livelihoods is shared by our entire Cypher team.

Project summary

Located in Manitoba, Canada, the Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation is located near the community of Pipestone, which is approximately 200 kms west of Winnipeg. Their reserve is located on unceded territory of the Dakota People in Treaty 2.

Sponsored by Enbridge and supported by Subcan Ltd., Cypher’s donated DUST/BLOKR (Sugar Blend) product was applied to an unpaved section of gravel road that ran through the community.

Cypher Green Roads & Helping Communities Build More Sustainable Livelihoods

Having had the privilege to work and see our products being used in over 50 countries around the world, we saw an opportunity to be genuine partners to the communities in which we operate. We developed the Cypher Green Roads initiative with this in mind as a way for us and our customers to give back to the host communities by enhancing local roads and infrastructure.

The Cypher Green Roads initiative provides a framework for Cypher and our partners to create long term value by sharing economic benefits and technical know how with local communities. We donate up to 5% of a project’s value for any orders exceeding USD $250,000 in the form of product to a local community near to the project location.
