We have a dedicated team of experts in our support department to help explain everything you need to know, from start to finish. Our team works together to get you all the answers you need to move forward.
Select a Trial Road Around a Kilometer Long
ROAD//STABILIZR® works well on a wide variety of roads including ones that experience high traffic volumes and weights. The continual compaction from traffic will help the road reach densities that exceed the materials’ Maximum Dry Density. Often, these high traffic volumes and high traffic weight roads are in the worst shape, so this gives Cypher Environmental the opportunity to take a customers’ worst-case scenario and show that we can improve it with an application of ROAD//STABILIZR® for sustainable soil stabilization and road construction.
Send in Soil Samples
If you’re local, we’re happy to help you with this. Canadian clients can send samples to us for testing. If you are located outside of Canada, we generally suggest using an independent lab. However, we are here to help provide guidance with taking samples.
Soil Testing Begins
Once we receive the samples, testing begins. If you are in a hurry to get your samples back due to time constraints, you can send your samples to an independent lab. However, Cypher Environmental will test your soil for you, and/or analyze the results when tested elsewhere.
Complete a Project Questionnaire
We use this document to help make our recommendations. You will include answers for traffic weights, volumes, speeds, road type etc. This way, we can provide the most accurate recommendations tailored specifically to your project.
Recommendations
We provide our recommendations based on the soil sample results. These recommendations range from leaving the in-situ material as is, to adding clay-rich material or gravel to your in-situ material.
Clay is needed when the fines in the material are under 20% by weight, or when the material lacks the required plasticity and plots below the A-Line on the Casagrande Chart.
Gravel is recommended if the percentage of fines in the material is over 60% and we want to improve such properties as traction or CBR.
Get the Product On-Site
You typically won’t need a lot of product. One-litre of product treats 33 cubic meters of compacted road base material. Depending on the depth of the material recommended to treat, you can calculate your product requirements.
For example, a typical trial road is 1KM x 8M x 0.15M. This would require 36L of ROAD//STABILIZR®. That’s just under two jugs!
Let the Construction Begin
Use a grader with a scarifier to rip the road to the desired depth. Typically, this is a minimum of 15 centimeters, and in more extreme cases, like a mine haul road, it could be as deep as 30 cm or more. A scarifier can rip the road up very easily and break everything apart. Once the in-situ road is ripped it is easy to add in gravel or clay, if required.
Mix in ROAD//STABILIZR®
Use a water truck to apply the product.
Create windrows and apply ROAD//STABILIZR® to the exposed surface and the windrows.
A good method to mix with a grader is to make a few passes with the water truck and follow with a Grader so it can begin to mechanically mix the soil by moving the windrows back and forth across the road. This process will be repeated until the required amount of ROAD//STABILIZR® and water have been applied and homogenized into the soil.
Compact the Soil
Use a Vibratory Steel Drum or Sheepsfoot Compactor to compact the soil. It is suggested to compact in layers. If you compact the full lift thickness, it can take longer to reach the required density.
Compact to over 98% of your dry density — ideally you will be at 100%. Tie in your second lifts and continue compacting.
Apply a Slurry Coat
Apply a very diluted ratio of ROAD//STABILIZR® to water, or water and DUST/BLOKR® on the surface of the road. Follow up with a Rubber Wheeled Compactor to complete the compaction process. This will help seal and smooth the road by bringing the fines up to the surface.
Drive on Your Road
You do not need to close a road to apply ROAD//STABILIZR®. You can apply one lane at a time if you prefer. As soon as you are done compacting you can drive on your newly treated road.
